Clearing IMAP Cache in Outlook Express

In Outlook Express every message that is read is cached locally for faster access in the future.  At times this cache can become corrupt, requiring its deletion.

This can be done as follows:

  1. Select the corrupt folder in Outlook Express

  2. Right click on the folder name

  3. Select Properties

  4. Go to the Local File tab

  5. Click the Delete button to remove all locally cached data in this folder.

This will not remove the messages from the server and thus they will reappear the next time Outlook Express connects to the IMAP server.

The actual data files for the cache are stored at a location similar to the path below:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\default\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{4AA26B6C-1F8E-4CE2-BD95-064AA356A2B1}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The actual path will differ slighty for each computer.

Files that begin with openmail and end with the name of a folder are the actual cache files.  The local message store for Outlook Express is also stored in this folder.
