Using the Cal Poly Authenticated Outgoing Mail Server
If you are connected to the Cal Poly network on campus, you do not need to use the authenticated outgoing mail server also known as "SMTP Auth."
The main beneficiaries of SMTP Auth are the "Road Warriors." If you are a mobile user who connects to the internet from multiple locations using multiple Internet Service Providers (ISP), then SMTP Auth is a tool that will make it easier to connect to one outgoing mail server without having to switch servers for each ISP.
If you have a workstation at home and you are using an e-mail client like Outlook or Mac Mail, you can either use your Internet Service Provider's (ISP's) outgoing mail server or you can use the Cal Poly Authenticated Outgoing SMTP server. We recommend that you use your ISP's outgoing mail server, but you may also use Cal Poly SMTP Auth instead.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) MAY NOT allow the use of SMTP Auth on their system, while others may prohibit the use of Port 25. If you are not able to use SMTP Auth using the following configurations, contact your ISP to confirm the ability to use SMTP Auth or contact the Cal Poly Service Desk at 756-7000 for more information.
